Right to information is one of the initiative taken by JANPATH . The first workshop for discussing need of RTI legislation in Gujarat, was held in 2000, in collaboration with Centre for Social Justice, (CSJ) and Cosumer Education and Research Center (CERC). After earthquake, the need of having such legislation to bring transparency and accountability in government functioning was felt very strongly. However it was necessary that the civil society Gujarat should raise their voice for such a legislation. Thus we had regional workshops in collaboration with Saurastra University, South Gujarat Univesity, North Gujarat University etc. Several column writers as well as mainstream media was approached so that issue gets approrpriate visibilty. Workiing group for RTI was formed, which gave key inputs in the process. In 2002, this working group was named as “Gujarat Initiative for Right to Information” (GIRTI), which actively got associated with National Movement – National Campaign for People’s Right to Information (NCPRI). Once RTI was in place, we decided to work basically for
- Awareness Generation
- Building enabling environment for RTI to grow
- Strengthening demand and supply side by providing training
- Hand holding of citizen to draft, file RTI, make use of the information and bring change.
- Research and publication.
GIRTI was later on named as Mahiti Adhikar Gujarat Pahel (MAGP). MAGP key programmes are :
- RTI helpline – 09924085000
- Saturday Legal Clinic
- RTI on Wheels
- Training Programmes
Today MAGP has grown into full-fledged independent organization and registered as Trust under Bombay Public Trust Act.
